Ayurveda- What is it?

Ayurveda is sanskrit, translated as The Science of Life. It is an ancient Hindu traditional medicine stemming from South Asia, particularly India and the practice has been recorded as far back as 5,000 years. It is the oldest form of medicine ever recorded. It is a whole mind-body practice that uses the elements (earth, air, fire, water, ether) as tools of healing such as breathing techniques, heat, energy, as well as earthly resources such as oils, herbs, plants, stones, crystals and soils.

The theory is that all aspect of one's life affects one's health. Ayurveda is a very in-depth and streamlined practice using eight components, different diagnosis methods, and using the Doshas to implement balance and harmony for the mind, body and spirit. Yoga and meditation are integrated with Ayurveda as well.

The Ayurvedic Abhyanga Massage is 60 minutes using warmed oil and a method of strokes to balance your Doshas. You must take your Dosha Questionnaire prior to your appointment.

What are Doshas?
There are 3 doshas that make up our physical and mental constitution of a person- Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha. Each dosha has its certain physical traits and behaviours linked to it. Sometimes these doshas can become imbalanced, thus leading to disturbances of the body, mind, and/or spirit. It can affect everything from sleep patterns to weight and digestive issues to psychological disturbances and even pain. Balancing these doshas is a matter of looking at the whole picture- every aspect of a person's life that may be causing any issues they are facing, then finding any and all methods and avenues of healing and change that will bring balance and harmony. Ayurveda focuses on the balancing with the 5 elements- earth, air, water, fire, and ether. When teaching Ayurveda, I reference Winnie The Pooh characters to demonstrate the traits of each Dosha, such as Vata- Tigger, Pitta- Rabbit, and Kapha- Pooh. Once you take the Dosha questionnaire, you will understand how I would use those characters to best describe the Doshas. Take the Dosha Questionnaire now

With Ayurvedic Massage you can assess one's dosha constitution and create a customized massage treatment plan to bring balance for your client. This is done by using warmed oil (Abyhanga), and using the appropriate speed, depth and direction of massage strokes.
